D.J. Carton added 12 points and four assists to lead the Golden Eagles (3-1) to their first top-10 victory since 2017. Carton tied the game on a free throw with 0.9 seconds remaining but missed the back end that resulted in Lewis' buzzer beater tip-in.
Fourth-ranked Wisconsin is the highest-ranked foe that the Golden Eagles have defeated since topping then-No. 1 Villanova on Jan. 24, 2017 at the BMO Harris Bradley Center. MU was 2-5 against ranked teams last season.
Marquette has met Wisconsin more times (127) than any other opponent in program history. UW leads the all-time series 68-59 but MU is in front 41-29 when the games are played in Milwaukee.
Notables:
- MU has won four of the last six meetings in the series.
- Carton made the first start of his Marquette career. Carton spent his freshman campaign at Ohio State and started three of the 20 games he appeared as the squad's third-leading scorer. Carton did not score in 21 minutes against the Badgers last season.
- The MU win snaps Wisconsin's 11-game winning streak, which is the longest among the nation's major conference teams and sixth-longest in NCAA Division I overall.
- Redshirt freshman Dexter Akanno scored the first points of his MU career with two free throws in the first half at the 3:56 mark.
- Freshman Dawson Garcia totaled seven points and eight rebounds for Marquette.
- Redshirt junior Greg Elliott played a big role in his 19 minutes, coming up with three steals and six points.
- Lewis added eight rebounds and two blocks in his time on the floor.
- The Marquette defense held UW to 29.2% from beyond the arc.
- For Wisconsin, D'Mitrik Trice (17), Jonathan Davis (12) and Nate Reuvers (11) all scored in double digits.
- In the 2019 meeting, a 77-61 UW win, Koby McEwen led the Golden Eagles with 19 points, while six Badgers scored double digits. McEwen contributed eight points and six rebounds tonight.
The Golden Eagles return to action on Dec. 8Â against Green Bay at Fiserv Forum.
