MU is back in action on Wednesday for a meeting with Xavier
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette University men's soccer team (4-4-1) finished with a 2-2 draw against Providence (6-1-2) on Saturday night in its third installment of BIG EAST play.
Zyan Andrade scored the first goal of the evening shortly after halftime in the 47th minute to give the Golden Eagles their first lead of the match. It was his first goal of the season, and Lukas Sunesson was credited with the assist. Sunesson would later find the back of the net in the 85th minute for his third goal this season after a shot by Harvey Read, which was deflected by the Providence goalkeeper right in front of the post.
"Providence are always a very resilient, well-coached team and we knew they would be difficult," said Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. "We started getting fatigued in the second half so we had to rotate people out for injury purposes. We could have done better sealing off the game and making some changes, but I thought we showed some real character in overtime and brought the game back to us."
The Friars were led by Christopher Roman and Gage Raftery, who scored within just over a minute and a half of each other at the end of regulation to erase MU's late 2-0 lead. Neither team would be able to put home the golden goal in two periods of extra time.
Chandler Hallwood played all 110 minutes in goal, faced 20 shots and made a season-high eight saves, one of which came with under a minute left in the second period of extra time. The redshirt junior has now allowed two goals or fewer in seven of nine appearances this season.
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will be back at home on Wednesday for a 7:05 p.m. CT meeting with Xavier (6-4-0).
