The Marquette University men's soccer team (6-7-1, 3-4-1 BIG EAST) is set to compete in its final road contest of the BIG EAST regular season this weekend. The Golden Eagles will take on the St. John's Red Storm on Saturday, Oct. 23, at 4 p.m. (CST) at Belson Stadium. MU enters Saturday's game with just two regular season matches remaining, while both teams are fighting to qualify for conference tournament play.
After a 2-0 start to BIG EAST play, St. John's (8-4-2, 3-2-2 BIG EAST) has picked up just one win in its past five contests, and is coming off a 2-1 2OT road loss to No. 2 Georgetown. The Red Storm currently sit in fifth in the conference standings with 11 points, one point ahead of Marquette.
The St. John's defense has allowed one or fewer goals to its opponent in 11-of-14 matches this year. The Red Storm is led by senior midfielder/defender Brandon Knapp, who has a team-best 13 points on four goals and five assists. In the net, redshirt junior Luka Gavran has allowed just nine goals in 14 matches. He also leads the nation with eight shutouts.
Mirsberger Nets Game-Winner Against DePaul
MU redshirt sophomore defender Alex Mirsberger chose the right time to tally his first goal of the season. In the team's Oct. 20 win over DePaul, the Brookfield, Wisconsin, native scored the match's lone goal, a 58th minute header off a corner kick from Beto Soto. This was the second goal of Mirsberger's career.
Andrade Emerges as Team's Top Facilitator
Redshirt junior midfielder Zyan Andrade has established himself as one of Marquette's top playmakers this season, currently tied as the BIG EAST leader in assists with five. The Brazil native has recorded four assists in the past seven games for the Golden Eagles, including two in the team's 3-1 win at Seton Hall. In conference play alone, Andrade's four assists place him atop the BIG EAST leaderboard.
