Camryn Taylor tied her career-high with 27 points
OMAHA, NEB. - The Marquette women's basketball team beat the Creighton Bluejays, 66-53, at D.J. Sokol Arena on Monday afternoon. With the win, MU (11-2, 8-1 BIG EAST) earns its fifth straight conference victory and improves to 8-1 on the road this season.
Sophomore forward Camryn Taylor had one of the best games of her career as a Golden Eagle, tying a personal-best in points with 27 on 12-for-14 shooting from the floor. She scored 15 of those points in the third quarter, including a buzzer-beating jumper to put MU up by 16. Selena Lott impacted the game in multiple ways, scoring nine points to go along with eight rebounds, five assists and four steals. Jordan King and Liza Karlen eached chipped in eight points.
Creighton (4-7, 3-4 BIG EAST) got off to a quick start, going up 8-2 in the first quarter while clamping down on defense to hold the Golden Eagles to just three of 16 shooting in the first 10 minutes of play. The two teams continued to battle in the second quarter, but nine points from Camryn Taylor, four from Taylor Valladay and some quality defense led to MU taking a 26-23 lead into the halftime break.
The third quarter is when the Golden Eagles began to flex their muscles as they hit 11 of their 17 shots (64.7%) and held the Bluejays to just 6/17 (35%) from the floor. Taylor, Lott and Karlen combined to score 26 of MU's 28 third quarter points on 11/13 shooting as it took a 54-38 lead into the fourth quarter.
MU's lead rose to as many as 20 points before an 11-0 CU run cut the lead to just nine points with under two minutes to play. A 3-pointer by Lott and late buckets by Marotta and Taylor would eventually put the game out of reach.
The Golden Eagles held the Bluejays to 30.2 percent shooting, the fifth time this season MU has held an opponent under 35 percent from the field.
Emma Ronsiek led Creighton with 16 points while Molly Mogensen had 13 points and three assists. Leading scorer Temi Carda was held to five points on 1/13 shooting.
