San Andres clinches team victory
The Marquette University men's tennis team (4-4) defeated DePaul (3-2), 4-3, Sunday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
Â
The win was the third-straight over the Blue Demons for Marquette, which has won 8-of-10 overall in the series.
Â
"I was really happy with the way the guys competed today," head coach Steve Rodecap said. "It's always a great battle with DePaul and we received contributions from a number of players.
Â
"Winning the doubles point the way we did was huge in creating momentum for singles," Rodecap added.
Â
The Golden Eagles opened the match by claiming the doubles point in dramatic fashion. After splitting wins at No. 1 and No. 3, the deciding match came down to the tandem of Ian Brady and Stefan Dragovic. The duo held off the Blue Demons 7-6 (5) in the tiebreaker, with Brady wrapping things up at No. 2.
Â
Straight-set wins by Dragovic and freshman Tin Krstulovic at No. 3 and No. 4, respectively, pushed Marquette ahead 3-1.Â
Â
Fran San Andres, the reigning BIG EAST Player of the Week, clinched the team victory with a 6-4, 6-4 win over DePaul's Tamas Zador at No. 2. DePaul closed the match by winning at the bottom two positions.
Â
Marquette returns to action on Saturday, March 13 when the team hosts Eastern Illinois. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m. CT.
