The Golden Eagles are coming off their first win of the season, a 10-5 triumph over Cleveland State at Valley Fields on March 27. Redshirt junior attackman Griffin Fleming posted a career-high four goals in the win to earn BIG EAST Conference Honor Roll recognition and leads the Golden Eagles with 14 goals and eight assists on the year. Redshirt freshman Devon Cowan is right behind him with 12 goals and five assists this season. He's posted a point in all 13 games of his collegiate career and scored in 11-straight contests.
Redshirt freshman Mason Woodward paces the Golden Eagles defense with 35 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers. He has posted at least five ground balls in all six games this season and is on the precipice of entering MU's career top 10 in both categories with over three years of eligibility remaining.
The Pioneers climbed both polls this week, up to sixth in the coaches' poll and fifth in the media poll after a 19-11 win at Providence on Saturday. DU out-shot PC, 63-32, and won 27-of-33 face-offs with All-American Yale-transfer TD Ierlan winning all 14 of his draws in his Pios debut.
The Pioneers began the season on Jan. 30 with a 9-8 win over Utah at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium before consecutive losses in North Carolina to No. 1 Duke and No. 4 UNC on Feb. 5 and 7, respectively. DU then beat MU by one goal, 10-9, on Feb. 20 in the first meeting between the two programs this season.
All-American Ethan Walker, who has 164 career goals and 91 assists, leads an offensive unit that is joined by transfer Jackson Morrill, who scored 113 goals in four years at Yale. Morrill leads DU this season with 20 goals and 22 assists. He is one of four players with at least 20 goals this season, led by Walker with 22.
Marquette is 2-9 all-time against Denver, with both of its wins coming in the BIG EAST tournament in 2016 and 2017. MU has been within three goals of ranked Denver squads in each of the last four meetings after that 2017 win, and most recently fell to the Pios, 10-9, on Feb. 20 in MU's season opener.
Following this weekend's action, Marquette returns to Milwaukee for Senior Day and its final game at Valley Fields on April 10 against Georgetown.
