DENVERÂ - Marquette University men's lacrosse fell to No. 6/5 Denver, 16-6, on Saturday at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium.
Devon Cowan got Marquette on the board first, but the Pioneers answered with four straight to lead 4-1 after quarter one.
The Golden Eagles received back-to-back goals from Connor McClelland and Russell Melendez to start the second frame.
After a goal from Denver, Devon Cowan tallied one for MU to make the halftime score 6-4 in favor of the Pios.
DU held Marquette scoreless in the third quarter, scoring six unanswered to start the second half.
Peter Henkhaus scored the last two of the day for the Golden Eagles, but the Pioneers totaled eight goals in the final frame to remain undefeated in conference play.
Cowan led MU with two goals and an assist, while Henkhaus had his first two goals of the year. Freshman Russell Melendez contributed a goal and an assist, while Connor McClelland added a goal and Ryan Fazio put up one helper.
Starting netminder Sean Richard made 15 saves in cage for the Golden Eagles.
For Denver (8-2, 6-0 BIG EAST), Jack Hannah and JJ Sillstrop each had a hat trick, while nine other players recorded a goal and four players had two assists. TD Ierlan went 11-of-12 at the dot and Alec Stathakis won seven face-offs. Defenseman Colin Squires scooped up four ground balls and Jack DiBenedetto caused two turnovers.
Marquette (1-6, 0-5 BIG EAST) returns home for a matchup against No. 10 Georgetown at Valley Fields for Senior Day on Saturday at 11 a.m. Central.
