Golden Eagles are back in action April 8 at Xavier
The Marquette University women's soccer team (5-4-0, 3-4-0 BIG EAST) fell to Creighton (3-4-1, 3-3-0 BIG EAST) 2-1 in overtime on Thursday afternoon in BIG EAST Conference action at Valley Fields.
Creighton's Ansley Atkinson scored less than two minutes into overtime to give the Bluejays a 2-1 victory. The loss drops Marquette into third place in the Midwest Division with one match to play. The top-two teams in each division earn a spot in the BIG EAST Tournament, April 16-18 in Providence, R.I. and a chance to claim the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
Katrina Wetherell netted her second goal of the season to kick off the scoring in the 35th minute. After a battle for the ball just outside the 18 on Creighton's end of the field, Wetherell gained possession and launched a shot that sailed into the top right corner of the net, just under the crossbar. MU's lead was short-lived however, as the Bluejays scored off a penalty kick in the 38th minute.Â
CU outshot the Golden Eagles 7-4 in the first 45 minutes, with three shots coming on frame. Wetherell tallied two of MU's four shots.
The second half was action-packed but both teams were held scoreless. MU goalie Mikki Easter came up big, saving three of the eight shots she faced. The Golden Eagles' best chance came in the 69th minute when Elaina Eckert had a chance to put her team in front but her header sailed just high.
Atkinson's golden goal for CU came just 1:02 into the first overtime period.
