MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's lacrosse team heads to Philadelphia for a rematch with No. 18 Villanova on Saturday at Villanova Stadium.

Marquette enters the weekend looking to maintain the momentum from its first two BIG EAST Conference wins of the season last week against St. John's and Providence. The Golden Eagles (3-7, 2-6 BIG EAST) claimed a 9-8 overtime win against SJU at home on Wednesday before needing quadruple overtime to beat PC, 7-6, on Saturday.
A pair of Golden Eagles earned BIG EAST weekly honors for their play in the two wins, with Devon Cowan as the league's attack player of the week and goalie Sean Richard was the conference's top freshman. Richard, who posted 30 total saves with a .682 save percentage, surrendered a mere 6.11 goals against average in a total of 137:31 in net.
Cowan leads the squad with 25 goals and 33 points through 10 games, while redshirt junior attackman Griffin Fleming has 17 goals and a team-high 11 assists for 28 points.
Villanova (5-3, 5-3 BIG EAST) sits third in the BIG EAST after a 23-8 win at St. John's on Saturday. Keegan Khan leads the Wildcats with 40 points on 18 goals and 22 assists, while Matt Campbell has a team-best 22 goals.
Campbell scored five goals in VU's 16-14 win over Marquette at Valley Fields in this year's previous meeting on Feb. 27. MU kept it close against the Wildcats but could not overcome a deficit after surrendering an early second quarter lead. Cowan led MU in that contest with four goals and a pair of assists.
Marquette is 3-6 all-time against Villanova and has lost each of the last four meetings. The last win for the Golden Eagles over the Wildcats came in the 2016 BIG EAST Championship semifinals, a 14-9 win at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium in Denver.
Following Saturday's matchup, MU plays its final regular season game of the season at St. John's on Friday, April 30 at 11 a.m. CT.
Marquette is currently fighting for a berth in this year's conference tournament, which will be held in Providence on May 6-8. The win over PC on Saturday put MU a half game behind the Friars for fourth in the league with two games remaining.
Only the top four teams will compete in the league tournament, so MU needs two wins its final games against VU and SJU, coupled with a PC loss to Georgetown on Saturday, to earn a semifinal berth. Should MU and PC finish with even league records, the Friars would hold the tie-breaker due to a three-goal advantage in their head-to-head meetings.
