VILLANOVA, Pennsylvania – The Marquette University men's lacrosse team fell, 19-8, to No. 18 Villanova on Saturday at Villanova Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (3-8, 2-7 BIG EAST) trailed 8-4 midway through the second quarter before the Wildcats reeled off eight-straight scores for a commanding 16-4 lead.
Redshirt senior Connor McClelland posted a hat trick to lead MU in scoring, while Devon Cowan, Griffin Fleming, Ryan Fazio, Morgan Macko and Colin O'Donnell each added scores of their own.
Corey McManus scored a game-high six goals for Villanova (6-3, 6-3 BIG EAST), while Matt Campbell scored five times.
Campbell also scored five goals in VU's 16-14 win over Marquette at Valley Fields in this year's previous meeting on Feb. 27. Cowan led MU in that contest with four goals and a pair of assists.
McClelland scored MU's first at the 12:21 mark of the opening frame to pull the Golden Eagles within one, 2-1, but MU kept trading two VU goals for one. Cowan's score came with 7:47 remaining in the second half prior to the 8-0 run from the Widcats, which spanned the halftime break.
Marquette is 3-7 all-time against Villanova and has lost each of the last five meetings. The last win for the Golden Eagles over the Wildcats came in the 2016 BIG EAST Championship semifinals, a 14-9 win at Peter Barton Lacrosse Stadium in Denver.
