Golden Eagles use two goals from Caceres to pick up first league victory
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — The Marquette University men's soccer team picked up its first win of BIG EAST play in convincing fashion Friday night, earning a 3-1 road victory over Seton Hall.
The Golden Eagles (4-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) came out and set the pace early on, getting the first shot of the game just 96 second in as a header by freshman Jonas Moen off a free kick sailed just wide of the mark. It wasn't long, however, before Marquette's scoreless drought came to an end as freshman midfielder Edrey Caceres used a set piece to find the upper left corner of the net, putting MU up 1-0 in the 12th minute.
"When Edrey's at his best, he's one of the best players in the league," said Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. "He's calm when some people are not calm, and he's surprisingly mobile defensively. It's very rare to have a two-way player who is so good with the ball offensively, but who still manages to get it done defensively, but he does. This was a great performance from him."
Lukas Sunesson got in on the scoring action in the 34th minute, as a crossing ball by redshirt junior midfielder Zyan Andrade found the All-American striker in front of the goal, who then used a header to make it a 2-0 game. MU carried that lead into the half.
The Golden Eagles picked up where they left off out of the locker room in the second half, as they continued to control the game through the final 45 minutes. Caceres once again found the back of the net in the 70th minute, when he scored his second goal of the match and third of the season after finishing a cross in traffic set up by Andrade. For the Brazil native, this was the second assist of the contest and third of the season.
"This was a very disciplined win. We stuck to the game plan and were very resilient," Bennett said. "Seton Hall is a powerful team and they're a team that can burn you, but that was how we played today. We came out and scored three goals on the road against a very good team, I'm really proud of what we did."
Seton Hall got on the board in the final minute with a goal from Ian Albuquerque, who scored with just nine seconds remaining in the match. MU held the Pirates to just two shots on goal in the contest.
This was MU's first win at Seton Hall since 2011, and second in program history.
NEXT UP: The Golden Eagles return home to host Providence (5-1-1, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) on Saturday, Oct. 2 at Valley Fields. This will be the team's Alumni Appreciation Night, and they will honor former MU players at the event. Play will begin at 7:05 p.m. (CST), and can be streamed on FloFC.
