Gibson, Boyle net goals for MU
The Marquette University women's soccer team (6-6-2, 2-3-1 BIG EAST) opened up its two-match homestand with a 2-2 draw against Providence (4-8-2, 2-3-1 BIG EAST) Thursday evening at Valley Fields.
The valuable point allows MU to remain in the hunt for one of the six spots in the conference tournament.
After falling behind 2-0 through 45 minutes of action, the Golden Eagles came out the aggressor following intermission and controlled the action. MU finally found the back of the net at the 54-minute mark when sophomore Kate Gibson scored her team-leading fourth of the season. Senior Katrina Wetherell's free kick stung the crossbar and Gibson was able to head home the rebound.
Freshman Aislinn Boyle tapped home an Elsi Twombly cross at the 73:57 mark to tie the score, the first of her career. MU had several quality chances down the stretch, but was forced to settle for the tie.
"I was really proud of our second half," senior Elizabeth Bueckers said. "They had us on our heels in the first half and we were able to get on our front foot, control possession and I think we deserved a third goal, but am happy with the tie."
The Golden Eagles are celebrating the program's 30th season in 2022 and alumni are back on campus for both of the team's home matches this week.
Marquette returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. CT when the team hosts Villanova at Valley Fields.
