Golden Eagles out-shoot Bluejays 19-10 in draw Saturday evening
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette men's soccer team (4-8-4, 0-4-4 BIG EAST) earned a point in conference play Saturday evening, posting a 2-2 draw against Creighton at Valley Fields.
"I thought the energy and the intensity that we wanted to play with were good," said Marquette associate head coach Sean Hughes. "We had a couple of really dangerous moments on the break and it would have been nice to take one or two more of those challenges, but overall I can't fault the energy and commitment from our players, they gave everything."
Hughes served as the acting head coach for tonight's match in place of Louis Bennett, who was away for personal reasons.Â
In a match in which the Golden Eagles created strong offensive opportunities throughout, Marquette posted 19 shots on the night while limiting Creighton to 10.Â
Marquette struck first, scoring the game's lone first-half goal in the 34th minute as senior forward Brooklyn Merl connected on a helper from Abdoul Karim Pare to find the back of the net and open an early lead. That held until the 56th minute, when Creighton broke through the MU defense to even things up.
The teams then exchanged a pair of penalty kicks coming off of fouls called in the box, as Marquette's Lukas Sunesson scored in the 60th minute, followed by a Creighton PK to equalize in the 66th minute. This was Sunesson's team-best sixth goal of the year.Â
Senior keeper Chandler Hallwood spent all 90 minutes in net for the Golden Eagles, recording three saves on 10 shots faced.Â
UP NEXT: Marquette will head out for its final road match of the season next Saturday as it travels to Washington, D.C., to face Georgetown on Oct. 29 at 12 p.m. (CT).Â
