Golden Eagles will play season finale Wednesday vs St. John's
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Marquette men's soccer team (4-9-4, 0-5-4 BIG EAST) fell to No. 24 Georgetown Saturday afternoon, suffering a 1-0 defeat at Shaw Field in Washington, D.C.
"Georgetown is a league champion, and this game went the way of many others," said Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. "We had big moments of the game with some good possession and very good chances hitting the post and shots blocked, but didn't score. I'm looking forward to Wednesday so our home fans can see and celebrate the 2022 class."
In what was the final road match of the season for the Golden Eagles, MU got off to a strong start offensively. Despite taking nine first-half shots while holding Georgetown to just two, the Golden Eagles found themselves in an early hole after surrendering a 14th minute goal to the Hoyas.Â
Marquette continued to be the aggressor in the second half, but none of its 20 shots found the back of the net. Defensively, the Golden Eagles held GU to just nine shots, three of which were on goal. Junior attacker Beto Soto led all players in the contest with six shots, two of which were on frame.Â
With the loss, Marquette has officially been eliminated from contention for the BIG EAST Tournament.Â
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles return home to wrap up the 2022 campaign next week as they host senior night vs St. John's on Wednesday, Nov. 2 at 7 p.m. (CT) at Valley Fields.Â
