Annual BIG EAST-Big Ten series enters seventh year in 2022-23
The Marquette University men's basketball team (2-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) hits the road for the first time this season when the team travels to Purdue (2-0, 0-0 Big Ten) on Tuesday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m. CT for a matchup in the annual Gavitt Tipoff Games series between the BIG EAST and Big Ten. Â FS1 features the national television broadcast, with Jason Benetti (play-by-play) and Bill Raftery (analyst) calling the action. Â Following Tuesday's outing, the Golden Eagles will travel to Ft. Myers, Florida, for the Rocket Mortgage Tip-Off Nov. 21-23.
Gavitt Tip-Off Games Honors BIG EAST Legend
     Â
The Gavitt Tipoff Games is a unique early-season series played between the two conferences and named in honor of Hall of Famer Dave Gavitt, founder of the BIG EAST and basketball visionary. Â Gavitt had a profound and lasting influence on the sport of basketball at the collegiate, professional and Olympic levels. He was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
  Â
This season's games, played Nov. 14-18, will mark the seventh year of the series. Â Marquette is 2-3 in its previous five appearances.
Limited Series Includes Postseason Matchup
     Â
While Marquette and Purdue have met just 10 times in the all-time series, the matchups do include a memorable NCAA tournament game.
  Â
The Boilermakers claimed a 75-73 overtime victory on March 15, 1969 in the NCAA Mideast Regional final courtesy of a buzzer-beating jumper by Rick Mount. Â Marquette had defeated Murray State and No. 7 Kentucky in the tourney, but Al McGuire's squad came up just short in its bid for a first-ever Final Four trip. Â Marquette was led by legendary George Thompson, who scored 28 points in his final collegiate game.
  Â
Purdue has claimed nine of the 10 meetings between the two programs in the series that dates back to the 1931-32. Â Marquette rallied from an 18-point second-half deficit at Fiserv Forum on Nov. 13, 2019 for a 65-55 win to claim its first-ever victory over the Boilermakers.
  Â
Tuesday's meeting will be the third between the two programs in the Gavitt Tipoff Games.
Milwaukee Native Joplin Dials Long Distance
     Â
Sophomore David Joplin, a Milwaukee native, scored a career-high 23 points in just 20 minutes of action against Central Michigan.
  Â
He finished 8-of-12 from the floor overall, including a 6-of-10 effort from behind the 3-point line. Â Joplin, who scored just four points in the opener, only reached double figures on one occasion (10 points vs. St. Bonaventure, Nov. 21, 2022) in 32 appearances off the bench in 2021-22.
  Â
The last player to knock down at least five treys off the bench was Kam Jones (5-of-10) against Georgetown on Feb. 16, 2022.
