
WBB Opens BIG EAST Play With 78-57 Win at Georgetown

King goes for 23 points in 100th career game
WASHINGTON, D.C. — The No. 24 Marquette women's basketball team (7-1, 1-0 BIG EAST) opened BIG EAST play with a road win Friday afternoon at McDonough Arena, defeating Georgetown 78-57.
In a game that marked the 100th at Marquette for both head coach Megan Duffy and senior guard Jordan King, the duo came up big time as the team got the win while King went off for a game-high 23 points to open BIG EAST play on a strong note.
Senior forward Chloe Marotta sparked Marquette early on, going for 10 points and three boards in the first quarter to help the Golden Eagles take control early. After trailing 7-6 in the early going, Marquette jumped in front and never trailed the rest of the way. Each squad scored 13 points in the second quarter to make it a 35-26 game at the half.
The Hoyas were able to keep within 10 points for the majority of the game until MU used a 7-0 run midway through the third quarter to gain some separation. The Golden Eagles then used a 24-11 fourth quarter to cement the victory and secure a 1-0 start to league play.
Marquette played with excellent ball movement throughout the contest, recording 24 assists on 28 made baskets. It also took care of business on the glass, winning the rebounding battle 50-34.
Georgetown (4-3, 0-1 BIG EAST) was paced by Kristina Moore, who finished the day with a team-best 19 points.

Jordan King went for a team-best 23 points, her third time scoring 20-plus points this season and the sixth of her career. She also registered five rebounds, five assists and three steals.

King's 23 points were two shy of her career-high of 25, which she set earlier this season.

Chloe Marotta recorded her eighth-career double-double and her second of the season, going for 14 points and 12 rebounds, along with eight assists.

Liza Karlen also finished with a double-double of 15 points and 12 rebounds along with three blocks. This was her second of the year and 10th of her career.

Along with playing in her 100th career game, this was also Jordan King's 100th career start.

With the win, Marquette is off to a 7-1 start to the campaign for just the fifth time in program history. This ties the team's best start to a year since the 2006-07 season.

This was the first true road contest for the Golden Eagles this season.

Marquette is now 11-7 all-time in BIG EAST openers, and 3-1 under Coach Duffy.

With the win, Marquette improves to 25-4 all-time against Georgetown including wins in the past 11 meetings.

Marquette finished the game shooting 40.6 percent (28-of-69) from the floor, 38.5 percent (5-of-13) from 3-point range and 72.7 percent (8-of-11) from the free throw line.
