Marotta goes for career-high 30 points in first BIG EAST loss of the season
SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. — The No. 24 Marquette women's basketball team (7-2, 1-1 BIG EAST) suffered its first loss of BIG EAST play Sunday afternoon at Walsh Gymnasium, falling to Seton Hall 82-78.
Both sides got off to a strong offensive start, combining to make 12 of the game's first 19 shots. Senior guard Nia Clark sparked the MU scoring early, making a pair of triples and going for eight points in the first six minutes of action.
After a near-even 15 minutes, the Pirates gained some separation before the half as they used a 14-0 run to pull ahead and take a 40-33 advantage at the break.
Marquette came out of the locker room firing as Chloe Marotta scored eight quick points to spark a 12-5 run which evened things up at 45-45 midway through the third, but the Pirates responded with a 9-0 run of their own to regain control and never looked back.
Marotta finished the contest with a career-high 30 points to go along with 12 rebounds, while shooting a perfect 12-for-12 from the charity stripe.
Seton Hall (6-3, 2-0 BIG EAST) was led by the duo of Lauren Park-Lane and Sidney Cooks, who finished with 31 and 23 points, respectively.

Chloe Marotta's 30 points surpassed her previous career high of 28, scored on March 24, 2022 against Toledo. This was her first 20-plus point scoring outing this season, and the fourth of her career.

Liza Karlen fell just shy of a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Jordan King filled the stat sheet as she went for 14 points, five rebounds and a team-best five assists.

Marquette had its best free throw shooting performance of the season, shooting 95 percent (19-of-20) from the charity stripe.

Marquette's starters accounted for 68 of the team's 78 points.

Marquette finished the game shooting 39.1 percent (27-of-69) from the floor, 27.8 percent (5-of-18) from 3-point range and 95.0 percent (19-of-20) from the free throw line.

With the loss, the Golden Eagles are now 17-11 all-time against Seton Hall. The Pirates have won each of the past four meetings in South Orange.
