MU sets multiple personal bests in final meet before conference championships
MADISON, WISCONSIN – The Marquette men's and women's track & field teams traveled to UW-Madison Friday afternoon for the St. Valentine's Invitational. This was MU's final indoor meet before the BIG EAST Championships.
"We looked really sharp. Everyone competed well across the board," head coach Bert Rogers said. "It was one of our most complete meets of the year. It was exactly what we wanted to do in a tune-up before the BIG EAST Championships."
In the final tune-up before the conference championships, senior Lindsey Mirkes took home the victory in the women's high jump with a mark of 1.69 meters/5 feet, 6.5 inches. Freshman Annika Bynum took third with a personal best 1.64 meters/5 feet, 4.5 inches.
Junior Arianna Mansavage took the gold in the 200-meter with a PR of 25.25, No. 10 all-time in MU history. Freshman Daylee Braden took fourth with a PR of 26.09.
It was a record-setting day for senior Megan Wallace, who set personal bests in multiple events. Wallace took home the silver medal in the women's long jump with a PR of 5.61 meters/18 feet, 5 inches. Wallace also went on to place fifth in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal best 8.92, No. 6 all-time at Marquette. Sophomore Mila Puseljic set a PR as well in the 60-meter hurdles with a 9.49.
In the women's shot put, Allie Flando achieved a personal best of 14.60 meters/47 feet, 10.75. Flando's mark moves her up to No. 4 all-time in MU history. Mikayla Wise set a PR as well with a distance of 13.22 meters/43 feet, 4.5 inches.
In the distance events, Laurel Moneysmith finished the 3000-meter run with a 10:16.76 PR and finished eighth overall. Mallory Lafever finished seventh in the mile and beat her previous PR by four seconds with a time of 5:15.61.
Junior Valerie Nzeakor finished fourth in the women's 60-meter and rolled to a PR of 7.99.
On the men's side, Junior Harry Baker placed second in the men's high jump with a mark of 1.93 meters/6 feet, 4 inches. Fellow Golden Eagle Simon Werven took third place and achieved an indoor PR scoring the same mark as Baker.
Vinnie Voudrie set a personal best of 18.72 meters/61 feet, 5 inches in the men's weight throw, No. 8 in MU history. Trey Baskin set a PR of 16.98 meters/ 55 feet, 2.25 inches.
Sophomore Julian Wright (60-meter) and Zachariah Murray (200-meter) both received runner-up honors in their respective events.
