The Marquette University men's basketball team (18-10, 10-7 BIG EAST) wraps up the road portion of the regular season when the squad travels to DePaul (14-14, 5-13 BIG EAST) on Wednesday, March 2 for an 8 p.m. CT matchup at Wintrust Arena. CBS Sports Network features the national television broadcast, with Rich Waltz (play-by-play) and Chris Walker (analyst) calling the action. Following Wednesday's outing the Golden Eagles will host St. John's on Saturday, March 5 on Senior Night.
Series With DePaul Spans Program History
Marquette's all-time series with DePaul dates back to the 1917-18 season (second year of MU's varsity competition) and includes 130 previous meetings, the highest total against any single opponent in program history.
The Golden Eagles own an 81-49 advantage in the series and have claimed eight of the last 11 matchups.
The extensive series history has been aided by the fact the two programs have been in the same league dating back to the 1991-92 campaign. Since that season, the teams have shared affiliation in the Great Midwest Conference, Conference USA and BIG EAST.
The Golden Eagles claimed the first meeting this season in the home-and-home series, earning an 87-76 victory on Jan. 11 at Fiserv Forum. Guard Greg Elliott led five players in double figures for MU, netting a career-best 25 points on 7-of-11 shooting from the floor.
Rob Judson, who served as special assistant to the head coach for four seasons (2017-21) at Marquette, is in his first season at DePaul in the same role.
Marquette Playing For First-Round Bye
The Golden Eagles, picked to finish ninth in the preseason coaches poll, find themselves in a position to claim a first-round bye and quarterfinal appearance in the upcoming league tournament entering the final week of the regular season.
With 10 BIG EAST victories already in the books, Marquette is now assured of a top-six finish and could claim as high as the No. 4 seed. One more win, or a loss by Seton Hall, would give MU at least a fifth-place finish. If both teams finish 10-9, Marquette would claim the tiebreaker with the season-series sweep over the Pirates.
There is a chance that Marquette, Creighton and Seton Hall could all finish 11-8 and each program would be 2-2 against each other on the season. In that scenario, MU would claim the No. 4 position, courtesy of its win over first-place Providence on Jan. 4.
