Golden Eagles record season-high 41 shots in loss to Aztecs
SAN DIEGO, Calif. — The Marquette women's lacrosse team (4-5, 0-0 BIG EAST) lost on the road Tuesday evening, falling to San Diego State 18-12.
The Golden Eagles took a season-high 41 shots, 30 of which were on goal, but they were unable to keep up with SDSU's efficient offensive attack as they dropped game one of a two-game west coast road trip.
Marquette got down early as it surrendered three quick goals, but responded with four-straight of their own including a pair by freshman attack/midfielder Elise Smigiel to take the lead. After taking an 11-8 lead into the half, the Aztecs remained on top the rest of the way as Marquette was held to just three second-half goals.
Smigiel finished with a team-high three goals and an assist on five shots as she recorded the first hat trick of her career. Lydia Foust, Kyra LaMotte, Emma Soccodato and Meg Bireley finished with two goals apiece. Defensively, junior Ellie Henry filled the stat sheet with two ground balls, three caused turnovers and a game-high seven draw controls.
Amanda Rumsey spent the full game in goal for MU, recording a season-high 14 saves.Â
San Diego State (3-4, 0-0 MPSF) was led by Camdyn O'Donnell, who finished with seven goals and an assist.
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will remain on the west coast as they travel to face Oregon on Sunday, March 20, at 2 p.m. (CT). Links to a stream and live stats will be available on GoMarquette.com.
