Schumar nets first career hat trick as Golden Eagles conclude six-game road trip
NIAGARA, N.Y. — The Marquette women's lacrosse team (3-4, 0-0 BIG EAST) suffered a 12-9 loss against Niagara Sunday afternoon at Niagara Field.
In what was the final game of a six-match road trip, the Golden Eagles capitalized on early free position opportunities as they scored three free position goals in the first quarter to get off to a 3-1 lead. Niagara then responded with six-straight goals of its own, taking a three-score lead of its own into the halftime break.
Despite an even second half in which each team scored five goals, the deficit proved to be too much to overcome for Marquette.
Junior attacker Mary Schumar, MU's assist leader, found the back of the net three times for her first-career hat trick, while also recording an assist. Marquette's six other goals were distributed between six different players. In total, four of the team's nine shots came from the free position.
Amanda Rumsey spent all 60 minutes in net for the Golden Eagles, recording eight saves in the contest.
Niagara was led by Lois Garlow, who scored a game-high five goals to go along with an assist.
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will return home to host Ken State at Valley Fields on Saturday, March 12 at 3 p.m. (CT). The match will be streamed on YouTube with live stats available on GoMarquette.com.
