MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's lacrosse team concludes its season-long four-game homestand on Saturday morning against Drexel University at Valley Fields.
First face-off is slated for 11 a.m. Central time under the dome in the Menomonee Valley. A free live broadcast will be available on the Marquette Athletics YouTube channel with Dan Avington and Eric Simon on the call. Live statistics are available through GoMarquette.com.
Following the game against the Dragons, MU hits the road for a game at Robert Morris on March 19 over Marquette's spring break.
THE MATCHUP: Saturday's game marks just the second meeting all-time between the two programs. The only other meeting was a 13-11 Drexel victory on Feb. 29, 2020 in Philadelphia during Andrew Stimmel's first season as MU head coach. Then-freshman Chris Kirschner scored a hat trick for the Golden Eagles while classmates Jake Stegman, Devon Cowan and Max Kruszeski also scored. MU out-shot DU, 40-36, won seven more faceoffs and led 10-9 with 14:43 remaining, but could not close out the Dragons.
MARQUETTE (2-3): The Golden Eagles rebounded from their three-game losing skid with a 13-7 victory over Detroit Mercy on March 5 at Valley Fields. Freshman Bobby O'Grady continued his hot play with a game-high four goals and leads MU with 14 goals, while classmate Will Foster posted a hat trick of his own. O'Grady earned BIG EAST Freshman of the Week honors on Monday and has been a key piece of a MU lineup in constant flux.
All-BIG EAST performers Devon Cowan and Zach Granger are both out indefinitely, alongside attackman Russell Melendez, who was leading MU in points early this season. Freshman attackman Nolan Rappis also went down with an injury against UDM.
Redshirt freshman goalie Michael Allieri has started all five games and has played all 309:05 in net for MU, while making 49 saves with a .480 save percentage.
All three of MU's losses have come against teams ranked in the current USILA Coaches Poll – No. 13 Michigan, No. 15 Jacksonville and No. 20 Utah.
DREXEL (3-2): The Dragons picked up an 18-17 win over local rival Saint Joseph's on Tuesday afternoon at home and have now won three-straight games since opening the year with a pair of losses. DU rallied from a 7-2 deficit against the Hawks to take a 17-15 lead and needed a Ryan Genord goal with 1:07 remaining to break a tie for the win. Sean Donnelly leads Drexel with 12 goals and 18 points this season, while Jack Mulcahy has 11 assists and 17 points.
