Golden Eagles conclude regular season Saturday against Butler
The Marquette University women's tennis team (12-8) opened the final weekend of the regular season with a 4-3 win over Xavier (10-9) in BIG EAST action Friday afternoon at Helfaer Tennis Stadium.
Marquette opened the match by claiming the doubles points. Natalija Popovic and Emilija Kojcic jumped out to a quick 4-0 advantage at No. 1 and cruised to a 6-2 win. The duo of Elisabeth Desmarais and Elizabeth Ferdman clinched the point with a 6-3 decision at No. 3.
After Xavier moved ahead 2-1 with a pair of singles wins, Popovic evened the score at 2-2 with a three-set victory at No. 1 after dropping the first set 6-0.
Lara Kaiser also rallied for a 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 5 to tie the score at 3-3, setting up a deciding match for Desmarais at No. 4. She was able to claim an exciting three-set win, pulling away late in the third after the first two sets came down to the wire.
The Golden Eagles will conclude the home portion of the schedule on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT when the squad hosts Butler on Senior Day. Prior to the match, Natalija Popovic will be honored.
