Foust tallies career bests in points, goals, Schumar ties program assist record
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette women's lacrosse team (7-7, 2-1 BIG EAST) earned a 24-17 win against Butler on Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields to remain undefeated at home on the season.
In a game which several program records were set and tied by the Golden Eagles, MU's performance was highlighted by 24 goals, the top all-time single game mark. The Golden Eagles also tallied 14 assists while taking 47 shots in the contest, each of which tied program single game records.
"We loved being able to put up 24 goals, that was great and we needed it," said Marquette head coach Meredith Black. "Butler's a great team and they kept that gap narrower than we maybe wanted, so we just had to keep finding the back of the net and we did. We have a lot of takeaways and a lot of ways we can get better from this one, which is great."
Along with multiple team records, junior attacker Mary Schumar also made her way into the record book as she dished out seven assists, tying a team single game record. Her seven helpers are tied for the second-most by any player in the NCAA this season. Leading MU's scoring efforts was senior midfielder Lydia Foust, who had career-best marks of nine points and six goals, while tying her career high of three assists. She fell just one goal and one point shy of tying program records as well.
Several other Golden Eagles came up big on the offensive end as well. Graduate attacker Kyra LaMotte added five goals, while Emma Soccodato, Shea Garcia and Meg Bireley each chipped in three.
Marquette won the draw control battle 22-21, led by Ellie Henry's nine. In net for the Golden Eagles, Amanda Rumsey played all 60 minutes, making eight saves while facing 25 shots.
The Golden Eagles came out firing and never looked back, going into the halftime break with a 13-4 lead behind five goals from Foust and two from LaMotte, Soccodato and Garcia. Butler responded with seven goals in the third quarter, but a pair of goals from freshman attack/midfielder Elise Smigiel helped Marquette go into the final frame up by seven, where it was able to finish the game off.
Campbell Connors paced the Bulldogs (6-7, 0-3 BIG EAST) with four goals. Greer Bireley had three goals and three assists, and Lindsey Schreiber, Gabryelle Bodine and Leah Rubino each found the back of the net twice.
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will continue their four-game homestand on Monday when they host No. 18 Notre Dame at 1 p.m. CT at Valley Fields. Links to a stream and live stats will be available on GoMarquette.com.
