Golden Eagles finish home schedule Sunday vs. Georgetown
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University women's lacrosse team (7-8, 2-1 BIG EAST) suffered a 19-10 defeat to No. 18 Notre Dame at Valley Fields on Monday afternoon.Â
Despite playing a strong second half and outscoring ND 7-3 in the third and fourth quarters, with seven different goal scorers beating the Notre Dame keepers in the half, the late push fell short.
"We played a good second half," head coach Meredith Black said. "We did a nice job on defense in the second half. The stats were so much more even than the first half was. So it was great that our team was able to come back and fight, but I'd love to see our team play a full 60 minutes."
Lydia Foust paced the Golden Eagles (7-8, 2-1 BIG EAST) with two goals and two assists. Emma Soccodato and Shea Garcia each totaled two goals in the game, while Mary Schumar and Kyra LaMotte added a goal and assist.
Freshmen Lily Dietrich and Meg Bireley each tallied a goal in the final period to cap off the Golden Eagles' scoring.
MU scored the first goal of the game but ND ended the first quarter on a 9-1 run.
Marquette outscored the Fighting Irish 3-2Â in the third frame, opening the period on a 2-0 run thanks to goals from Schumar and LaMotte.Â
The Golden Eagles also held the edge the final quarter, edging Notre Dame 4-2 in the frame. MUÂ started the fourth quarter on a 2-0 run, with Foust and Soccodato finding the net.Â
For the Fighting Irish (7-8, 2-5 ACC), Jackie Wolak led the scoring with three goals and four assists, and Madison Ahern contributed six goals on the day. ND won 20 draws, headlined by nine from Diana Kelly and six for Kelly Denes.Â
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will play their final home game of the year on Sunday, hosting the Georgetown Hoyas on Sunday, April 24. The opening draw will come at 12 p.m. at Valley Fields.
