Lindsey Mirkes heads to Fayetteville, Arkansas for NCAA Qualifier on May 28
MILWAUKEE – Marquette University senior Lindsey Mirkes is set to compete in the high jump at the 2022 NCAA West Preliminaries in Fayetteville, Arkansas. The NCAA West Preliminaries begin Wednesday, May 25, and conclude on Saturday, May 28. The meet will be held at John McDonnell Field on the University of Arkansas campus.
The women's high jump is slated for Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Live results for the meet can be found here. ESPN will have coverage for all four days of the west regionals.
"I'm really excited to be with that tough competition because you don't really get to see that during the regular season," said senior captain Lindsey Mirkes. "It's cool to be on that bigger stage and compete with some of the best competitors in the country and be a part of that."
Athletes who ranked among the top-48 in their respective events earned a berth into the NCAA West Qualifier. The top-12 times or marks in each event from the East and West Preliminary Rounds will advance to the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon.
Mirkes comes into the preliminary round tied for the 32nd best mark in the west region, 68th nationally, with a mark of 1.76 meters/5 feet, 9.25 inches that she set back on Apr. 27 at the Drake Relays.
"I feel strong coming off the BIG EAST Championships. I've had a lot of good practices from BIG EAST to now and I've been gaining a lot of confidence. I haven't hit that personal best yet, but I feel like it's coming and just need to bring everything together."
The Marquette senior is coming off a third-place finish in the high jump at the BIG EAST Championships. She recorded a mark of 1.74 meters/5 feet, 8.5 inches to earn all-conference honors for the seventh time in her decorated career.
"Each year I feel like I've grown. My first time going to regionals I felt like a baby. I was just excited to be there. That was my goal and I didn't really have anything past that. Last year, I had that confidence that I belonged there and could see myself getting past that level."
The De Pere native is making her third appearance at the west regionals. She first qualified for the west preliminaries during her sophomore season back in 2019 where she finished 26th with a mark of 1.70 meters/5 feet, 7 inches. Mirkes returned to the west regionals in 2021 where she cleared a height of 1.77 meters/5 feet, 9.75 inches and took 19th place.
"Being at Marquette has been the best five years of my life. This team has been a family to me, and I've grown and learned so much. I just want to take this all in, leave it all out there and have fun."
