Golden Eagles host Milwaukee Thursday in home opener
The Marquette University women's soccer team (1-1-0) wrapped up its two-match road swing to open the season with a 2-1 win at Central Michigan (0-2-0) Sunday afternoon in non-conference action.
The Golden Eagles improved to 6-0-1 all-time against the Chippewas, finishing with nine shots overall, five of which were on goal.
"Hats off to CMU for a hard-fought match that tested our team until the final whistle," head coach Frank Pelaez said. "I am proud of our team's effort and resilience today and its ability to bounce back after Thursday's game. Sunday road games are extremely difficult, but we were able to re-focus and execute our game plan."
Marquette applied constant pressure in the first 45 minutes and the team was finally rewarded in the closing minute of the half. Midfielder Molly Keiper, who had just checked in and celebrated her birthday on Saturday, served a corner kick into the box at the near post and it deflected off a CMU defender and into the back of the net for an own goal.
MU moved ahead 2-0 in the 58th minute when Isabella Cook converted on a penalty kick for her first goal of the year. Senior Elizabeth Bueckers created the opportunity by breaking free down the right side and applying pressure on the back line, resulting in a foul in the box.
CMU closed the gap to 2-1 at the 79:05 mark, heading home a corner kick, but Marquette was able to hold off the Chippewas the remainder of the contest and secure the win.
The Golden Eagles return to action Thursday night at Valley Fields when the team hosts Milwaukee in the home opener. Match time is set for 7:30 p.m. CT and will the second game of a doubleheader with the men's team, which hosts nationally ranked Tulsa at 5 p.m. CT.
