Marquette Set to Host USF Friday
The Marquette University men's soccer team (1-1-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) continues its 2022 campaign this weekend as it plays host to the South Florida Bulls on Friday, Sept. 2, at Valley Fields in Milwaukee. The game is set to kick off at 7:05 p.m. (CT), and will be streamed on FloSports with live stats available on GoMarquette.com.
South Florida got off to an 0-1-1 start to the season last week as it posted a 0-0 draw at home in its season opener vs Florida Gulf Coast on Aug. 25, before dropping a 1-0 decision on the road to No. 24 North Carolina on Aug. 28. The 2021 season saw the Bulls finish 6-7-2 overall with a 4-5-1 mark in AAC play. While they lost their top goal scorer from a year ago, six of their seven top point-getters return this season.
Sunesson Named to BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll
Following his performance in the first week of games for Marquette, senior striker Lukas Sunesson was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll. The Taby, Sweden, native led the squad with five points in last week's matches, totaling two goals and an assist. He scored on a penalty kick in the season opener against Tulsa, before registering a goal and an assist in MU's 6-1 win over Utah Tech.
Sunesson was named to the all-BIG EAST preseason team this year for the second-consecutive season. Marquette's top goal scorer a season ago, he totaled six goals on the year to garner second-team all-BIG EAST honors.
New Faces Everywhere
While Marquette returns plenty of production from last year's squad, including 11 starters and 16 letterwinners, it also welcomes in 10 newcomers. Seven freshmen and three transfers join coach Louis Bennett's squad this fall.
Newcomers include Ben Barkley (Tulsa, Okla.), Abdoul Karim Pare (Abidjan, Cote D'Ivoire), Brooklyn Merl (Cologne, Germany), Ludvig Målberg (Västra Götaland, Sweden), Kyle Bebej (Joliet, Ill.), Diegoarmando Alvarado (Addison, Ill.), Mitar Mitrovic (Belgrade, Sweden), Lucas Nesthus (Pewaukee, Wis.), Tristan Rønnestad-Stevens (Perth, Australia) and Ryan Koschik (Chicago, Ill.)
Series History
Friday's contest will be the 17th all-time meeting between Marquette and South Florida. The Golden Eagles trail 5-10-1 in a series which dates back to 1995, though the teams have met up just once since 2009. In Milwaukee, the Bulls hold a 4-2 edge. MU's last win in the series came in 2004, a 1-0 win in Tampa.
