Golden Eagles fall short in first road contest of the season Monday night
MADISON, Wis. — The Marquette men's soccer team (3-2-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) fell in its first road contest of the season, dropping a 4-2 decision Monday night at the McClimon Track and Soccer Complex in Madison.
"We're hugely disappointed with this result," said Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. "In the first half, we had a three-minute spell where we lost our concentration at the end of the half, then in the second half we did almost the same and gave them set pieces. It was the set pieces that really killed us, and it's very disappointing. We looked stylish, but played without any punch."
On a rainy evening, the game got off to a slow start, with just one shot on frame from either side through the first 40 minutes. With five minutes left in the half the Golden Eagles struck first as freshman midfielder Mitar Mitrovic netted the first goal of his career, coming on an assist inside the box from Ben Barkley. The Badgers responded quickly, getting on the board just before halftime in the 43rd minute.Â
Following the half, the Badgers used an onslaught of quick goals to pull ahead and didn't look back. UW scored goals in the 49th, 59th and 63rd minutes, two of which came following set piece kicks.Â
The Golden Eagles didn't go away quietly, however. In the 79th minute, sophomore midfielder Edrey Caceres scored after a ball in the box ricochet off several MU players before finding its way to Caceres for his second goal of the season.Â
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will return home this weekend as they host Yale (2-0-2, 0-0 Ivy) on Saturday, Sept. 20, at 7:05 p.m. at Valley Fields.
