Golden Eagles earn road point in BIG EAST opener against nationally-ranked Musketeers
CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Marquette men's soccer team (4-3-1, 0-0-1 BIG EAST) opened up BIG EAST play with a point on the road Saturday night at Corcoran Field, playing to a 0-0 draw against No. 19 Xavier.
"I'm not going to complain about a point away from home," said Marquette head coach Louis Bennett. "We had some opportunities right at the beginning of the game, then we had three opportunities right at the end of the game, so I would say the first 20 minutes and then the last 10 minutes we were very pleased with, then we had to battle in-between. We didn't give anything away, which I was really happy with."
In a match which was highlighted by defense, MU held the 19th-ranked Musketeers (6-0-3, 0-0-2 BIG EAST) to their first scoreless result of the season. This was Marquette's first point on the road against a nationally ranked opponent since the 2014 season. This was also the team's first draw of the year.Â
Junior attacker Beto Soto led the Marquette attack with three shots in the match. MU finished the night with eight shots, two of which were on goal. While Xavier took 17 shots in the contest, it was held to just four shots on frame.
Marquette found success in setting up set piece opportunities, forcing 10 corner kicks and drawing 12 fouls in the match. In net for the Golden Eagles, senior Chandler Hallwood earned the shutout, facing 17 shots while making four saves and playing all 90 minutes in goal.Â
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles will play their final non-conference match of the year as they travel to take on Saint Louis (3-3, 1-0 A-10) on Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 7 p.m. (CT).
