
WBB Loses at St. John's 66-61

King and Marotta combine for 51 points in the loss
QUEENS, N.Y. — The Marquette women's basketball team (11-7, 4-5 BIG EAST) suffered a loss Wednesday evening inside of Carnesecca Arena, falling 66-61 to St. John's.
Strong scoring performances from the senior duo of Chloe Marotta and Jordan King weren't enough for Marquette, as the duo combined for 51 points in the loss.
The Golden Eagles got off to a sluggish start, as six first-quarter turnovers caused them to get out to an early deficit and play from behind through the majority of the contest. After facing a 20-11 deficit early in the second quarter, Chloe Marotta went on a personal 6-0 run to help spark the Golden Eagle offense and bring the game back within a single possession.
After trailing through most of the first three quarters and facing a 44-38 deficit, the Golden Eagles scored on six of their first eight shots to open the third period, taking their first lead since the 8:24 mark of the first quarter. The lead would be short-lived, however, as the Red Storm answered with a 6-0 run to pull back ahead for the remainder of the contest.
King led all scorers on the night with a game-high 27 points, to go along with six boards, four assists and two steals. Marotta went four a double-double of 24 points and 12 boards. MU had a strong performance on the glass, outrebounding the Red Storm 41 to 24, but St. John's scored 34 points in the paint to just 18 for Marquette.
St. John's was paced by the duo of Jayla Everett and Kadaja Bailey, who finished with 18 points apiece.

With her appearance in tonight's contest, Chloe Marotta now sits alone in second all-time in career games played at Marquette with 135. She passed Angel Robinson (2007-11), and sits only behind Lauren Van Kleunen (2016-22) who has 160.

Jordan King climbed a spot on MU's all-time scoring list, passing Beth Ayers (1983-87). She now sits in 25th all-time with 1,181 points.

Marotta finished with a double-double of 24 points and 12 rebounds, her 10th career double-double and the fourth of the season.

This was Marotta's third 20-plus point scoring performance of the season, and the sixth of her career.

Jordan King went for a game-high 27 points on 10-of-18 shooting from the floor. This was her eighth 20-plus point scoring performance of the season, and the 11th of her career.

Claire Kaifes recorded seven rebounds, including six offensive boards, in just 13 minutes of action.

This was the first time this season that MU has had two players each score 20 points or more in the same game. The last time this happened was 3/16/22.

With 767 career rebounds, Chloe Marotta now sits just one rebound from moving into Marquette's all-time top-10. Allazia Blockton (2015-19) currently sits in 10th with 768.

Marquette finished the game shooting 38.5 percent (25-of-65) from the floor, 27.3 percent (3-of-11) from 3-point range and 80.0 percent (8-of-10) from the free throw line.

With the loss, Marquette is now 20-11 all-time against St. John's. This was SJU's first win in the past nine meetings.
