Golden Eagles host nationally ranked Georgetown Thursday night
The Marquette University women's soccer team (5-7-4, 2-3-2 BIG EAST) concluded its two-match road swing on Sunday afternoon with a 1-1 draw at Villanova (4-4-7, 1-4-2 BIG EAST).
Â
Both teams competed with just 10 players the final 37 minutes of the match after MU's Isa Cook and VU's Maddie Fried were issued straight red cards for unsporting behavior following an aggressive challenge by Fried near midfield.
Â
Marquette tied the score at 1-1 in the 52nd minute on Josie Bieda's team-leading third goal of the campaign. Mia Haertle played a long service from the back line and Bieda was able to track it down and sneak a right-footed shot from the top of the box just inside the right post.
Â
Bieda's tally snapped a three-match scoreless streak for the Golden Eagles and kept the team in the mix for a spot in the six-team conference tourney. MU remains one point behind Seton Hall for sixth place with three matches remaining.Â
Â
Marquette trailed 1-0 at the intermission after the Wildcats found the back of the net on a perfectly-placed strike after the ball deflected off a MU defender near the top of the box. Hailey Block had Marquette's best chance of the half, but her left-footed shot was saved by the VU netminder.
Â
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles return to action on Thursday, Oct. 19 when the team hosts nationally ranked Georgetown to continue league play at 7 p.m. CT.
