The Golden Eagles held off Illinois by a single stroke in Tuesday's final round
KETTERING, Ohio – The Marquette University men's golf team claimed a team championship in the Dayton Flyer Invitational at NCR Country Club on Tuesday afternoon, beating runner-up Illinois by one stroke.
The Golden Eagles entered the final day tied with the Illini at 9-under par and had all five golfers fire rounds of par-or-better, including 1-under 70s from Bhoom Sima-Aree, Max Lyons and Patrick Adler. Those three pushed MU to a 3-under 281 on the day, one stroke better than Illinois, which had two of its counting scores over par to offset the 3-under 68 by Ryan Voois. Adler and Sima-Aree each had a team-high five birdies for MU on Tuesday.
"We play the game for moments like this," Marquette head coach Steve Bailey said. "We challenged each guy to embrace a 'give-me-the-ball attitude' and play to our standard, not a scoreboard. I'm extremely proud of how all five of our guys embraced the circumstances and battled until the end."
The Golden Eagles led the field by five strokes at the conclusion of the opening round yesterday, but the Illini caught up with a 13-under 271 in the second. MU finished as runner-up in the event last fall at NCR, falling to Illinois by four strokes over the final two rounds.
"We were in the same spot last year at this event, battling down the stretch and came up a few shots short," Bailey said. "That makes this win so much sweeter and will give our guys a big boost moving forward. So many big-time shots and putts we dropped down the stretch and we will be able to pull from these moments in the future."
Over all 54 holes, graduate student Josh Robinson led the Golden Eagles in a tie for second at 6-under 207 (66-70-71), including a 5-under 66 in Monday's opening round, which included a team-best seven birdies. Classmate Bhoom Sima-Aree (68-70-70—208) jumped four spots up the individual leaderboard on Tuesday and into a tie for fourth place with three others at 5-under par.
The team victory is Marquette's first since claiming the 2023 BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship by three strokes this past spring at Riverton Pointe Golf Club in Hardeeville, South Carolina. The Golden Eagles also won the Redhawk Intercollegiate in Pittsburgh the week prior to the BIG EAST tournament and earned three runner-up finishes last year.
NCR Country Club's South Course ranks among Golfweek's Top Classic Courses list (built prior to 1960) and has hosted numerous state, regional and national golf championships over the last 70 years. It will play as a par 71 at 7,006 yards for this week's tournament.
