
Lyons Tied for Fifth in the Puerto Rico Classic

Lyons shot a 5-under 67 through 18 holes at Grand Reserve Golf Club

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Junior Max Lyons shot a 5-under 67 in the opening round of the Puerto Rico Classic at Grand Reserve Golf Club on Sunday and is tied for fifth through 18 holes.
The Golden Eagles recorded a 1-under 287 first round score as a team and are in 15th place after the first day of competition.Â
Lyons began his day with a par on the par-4 14th hole before notching an eagle on No. 15 and consecutive birdies on Nos. 16 and 17 to push him to 4-under par over his first four holes. The junior then recorded a double bogey on No. 18 and a bogey on No. 1 before finishing his round with four more birdies over his final 11 holes.
Lyons' opening round 67 is the lowest score he has recorded this season and his lowest since a 6-under 65 in the opening round of the 2023 Valspar Collegiate on March 27 of last spring at the Floridian Golf Club in Palm City, Florida.
Lyons posted a team-best six birdies in addition to the team's lone eagle on Sunday, while graduate student Josh Robinson is second on the team with a 3-under 69 and is tied for 17th overall. Robinson posted a clean card on Sunday with three birdies and zero holes over par.
Aidan Lafferty notched a 1-over 73 and is tied for 69th.

Lyons and Lafferty are each making their third appearance in the event. Lyons recorded his best collegiate 54-hole score to date during his freshman season in the Puerto Rico Classic with an 11-under 205, which included a 5-under 67 second round.
North Florida posted a team score of 17-under par on Sunday and leads the event by one stroke over Tennessee. Iowa's Noah Kent fired a 9-under 63 for the individual lead.

The 2024 campaign marks the sixth year in a row that the Golden Eagles are competing in the Puerto Rico Classic and the third time they've played at Grand Reserve in as many years. Last season, Marquette recorded a 1-over par 865 (292-285-288) to place 11th and was led by Josh Robinson's 6-under par 210 in a tie for 14th place individually.
The event, hosted by Purdue, began in 1993 and is in its 31st iteration this spring. Former MU All-American Hunter Eichhorn holds the tournament's single-round scoring record with the 11-under 61 he shot in the third round of the event in 2022.
