Golden Eagles secure first round bye in BIG EAST Tournament with the win
CINCINNATI, Ohio — The Marquette women's basketball team (18-9, 11-7 BIG EAST) picked up a win in its regular-season road finale Saturday afternoon, defeating Xavier 58-46 at the Cintas Center in Cincinnati.
In a game which the Golden Eagles never trailed, MU had three different players score in double-figures led by senior guard Jordan King's 19-point showing. Marquette controlled the pace throughout, and locked things down on the defensive end to earn the victory and secure a first round bye in the BIG EAST Tournament. MU is now guaranteed to finish with either the four or five-seed.
After holding a four-point advantage through the first 10 minutes, the Golden Eagles gained separation with a 17-10 second quarter sparked by the play of junior forward Liza Karlen, who scored 13-straight points for MU in a span between the first and second quarters. Marquette saw its lead cut to seven points early in the fourth quarter, but kept its composure to remain in control the rest of the way.
Along with King's strong scoring performance, Karlen and Chloe Marotta also had big outings, Karlen going for 15 points, eight boards, three steals and two blocks, and Marotta going for 12 points, nine rebounds and three assists.
The Musketeers were led by Kaysia Woods and Mackayla Scarlett, who finished with eight points apiece.

Jordan King moved up a spot on Marquette's all-time scoring list, passing Heidi Ach (1987-91) for 18th in program history. She now has 1,337 points in her career.

King finished the game with 19 points, six rebounds, four assists and three steals. This was her 23rd double-figure scoring game of the season, and the 66th of her career.

Liza Karlen finished with 15 points, eight rebounds, two assists, three steals and two blocks. This was her 13th double-figure scoring game of the season, and the 32nd of her career.

Chloe Marotta came just shy of a double-double, finishing with 12 points and nine boards to go along with six assists and a steal. This was her 23rd double-figure scoring game of the season, and the 41st of her career.

With the win Marquette secured a first-round bye in the BIG EAST Tournament, and is guaranteed to finish as either the four or five-seed. It will face St. John's in the 4-seed vs 5-seed quarterfinal game on Saturday, March 4 at 1:30 CT on FS2.

The 2023 BIG EAST Tournament will take place March 3-6 at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville, Connecticut.

Marquette finished the game shooting 46.0 percent (23-of-50) from the floor, 20.0 percent (2-of-10) from 3-point range and 76.9 percent (10-of-13) from the free throw line.

With the win, Marquette finishes 5-5 on the road this season.

With the win, Marquette improves to 21-7 all-time vs Xavier, and has 14-straight wins against the Musketeers.
