Golden Eagles improve to 7-1 on the year with second-ever win over an ACC foe
MILWAUKEE — The Marquette women's lacrosse team (7-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) added another tally mark to the win column Sunday afternoon, posting a 15-11 win over Louisville at Valley Fields.
Louisville's an outstanding team and a tough ACC opponent, so this is definitely a circled game on our non-conference schedule," said Marquette head coach Meredith Black. "We're really proud of the team."
In what was the team's second-ever win over an ACC opponent, the Golden Eagles put together a strong all-around performance to build on its best start in program history led by a seven-point performance from senior attacker Mary Schumar and 12 saves from sophomore Brynna Nixon.
The nation's top-scoring offense hit its stride in the second half, as Marquette scored nine of the game's final 12 goals to pull away after trailing for much of the first half. The team's scoring efforts were led by hat trick performances by freshman attacker Tess Osburn and sophomore attacker Meg Bireley.Â
After going down 6-3 midway through the second quarter, MU was able to regain its composure and bring the deficit down to just one at the half.Â
Marquette out-shot the Cardinals in the contest 43-27, and took advantage of 18 Louisville turnovers. Nine of MU's 15 goals had assists, including five from Schumar, who also finished with four ground balls.Â
Junior midfielder Josie Kropp took the majority of the reps in the draw circle for the Golden Eagles, recording a game-high seven draw controls while senior Ellie Henry tacked on five.Â
Nixon had a career day in net for MU, playing all 60 minutes and recording a career-high 12 saves on the afternoon with a .522 save percentage.Â
Louisville was led by Allegra Catalano, who had a team-high four goals in the contest. Sara Addeche played the full game in net for the Cardinals, recording 12 saves.Â
