Golden Eagles remain perfect on the road and improve to 9-1 on the year
MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. — The Marquette women's lacrosse team (9-1, 0-0 BIG EAST) tacked on another win Sunday afternoon as it defeated Central Michigan at the CMU Soccer & Lacrosse Complex, 17-9.
The Golden Eagles remained perfect on the road and continued to build on their best start in program history, improving to 5-0 away from home and 9-1 overall this season with a controlling win over the Chippewas.
After holding a 4-3 lead late in the first quarter, Marquette opened the floodgates scoring 11 of the game's next 13 goals. That lead would balloon to as many as 10 points, before the Chippewas were able to narrow the gap a little bit late.
Marquette's offensive performance was highlighted by a trio of hat tricks, including a pair from freshmen Tess Osburn and Isabelle Casucci, along with a three-goal, two-assist performance by senior Hannah Greving. Grieving's five points were matched by senior attacker Mary Schumar, who posted yet another five-assist performance, her fifth game with five or more helpers this season.
The nation's top draw team took care of business once again, as MU out-drew CMU 17-12 led by Ellie Henry's eight. The senior also had a game-best three caused turnovers.
Joining the hat trick performers in the scoring column were Emma Soccodato, Shea Garcia and Lydia Foust, each finishing with two goals, while Meg Bireley and Leigh Steiner each scored once. Steiner tacked on a career-high three assists to her performance as well.
In net for MU, sophomore Brynna Nixon played all 60 minutes as she tallied seven saves with a .438 save percentage.
Now just one game from tying its highest win total in program history, Marquette has already matched its best-ever road win total for a season, doing so before the start of BIG EAST play.
CMU was led by Audrey Whiteside, who had a team-best three goals.
