Golden Eagles travel to UIC Thursday
The Marquette University women's soccer team (1-2-1, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) wrapped up a two-match homestand Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 loss against Minnesota (3-1-0, 0-0-0 Big Ten) at Valley Fields.
Â
Sunday's outing concluded play in the Milwaukee Challenge Cup, which also featured Denver and UW-Milwaukee. Seniors Hailey Block and Isa Cook were both named to the all-tournament team.
Â
"Minnesota dictated play today and it was an uphill battle, but we battled as a team," head coach Frank Pelaez said. "Every day you encounter adversity can be turned into a positive if you learn from it and get better as a result and that's our plan."
Â
The Gophers dominated possession in the first half and finally broke through at the 12:56 mark when forward Izzy Brown touched home a close-range shot after a quick counter following a Marquette goal kick. The Golden Eagles collected just one shot in the first 45 minutes of action.
Â
Minnesota moved ahead with just over five minutes left in the match on a free kick from 25 yards out.
Â
Netminder Chloe Olson made her first start of the campaign and finished with three saves and Alexa Maletis was inserted into the starting lineup to replace the injured Elsi Twombly, who left Thursday night's game.Â
Â
The Golden Eagles return to action on Thursday, August 31 when the team travels to UIC for a 6 p.m. CT matchup in Chicago.
