Golden Eagles open three-match road swing
MILWAUKEE -Â The Marquette University men's soccer team (6-0-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) will compete in its first road match of the season on Friday, September 15 at 7:30 p.m. CT as the squad takes on BIG EAST foe Creighton (1-2-2, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) at Morrison Stadium in Omaha.
Marquette Offense Ranks #1 In Goals Scored This Season Â
With 19 goals, MU has strung together six-straight wins to open the season. The team continues its best start since the 2012 season, a season in which the Golden Eagles were crowned BIG EAST Tournament Champions. Â
The Golden Eagles have had no shortage of offense this season, scoring a season high of six goals against Detroit Mercy, with five of the goals coming in the second half. Holding the number one stop in NCAA DI goals scored (19), MU is currently averaging 3 goals per match and has shown serious striking power. Â Â
Featuring depth in the scoring column this season, three players scoring two goals in three matches. Brooklyn Merl continues to anchor the Golden Eagles attack as he has scored in four out of the six matches this season. Â
Golden Eagles Defense Holds StrongÂ
MU's back line has played an equal part of its hot start tallying three consecutive shutouts and earning a number one ranking in goal differential of 15.Â
Marquette's defense is led by keeper Lugvid Målberg who has put together three clean sheets in three consecutive matches. Together, the back line and Målberg have only given up four goals on the season.Â
Most recently against in-state rival Wisconsin, the Golden Eagles picked up a red card in the 52nd minute and were forced to play a man down for the rest of the match and held the Badger scoreless for the remainder of the game.Â
Soto Earns BIG EAST Weekly Honors
Former BIG EAST Freshman of the Year Beto Soto was honored by the BIG EAST being named to the Weekly Honor Roll for the week ending September 11, following a 3-1 victory over UTRGV.
The Texas native led the offensive attack for the squad Friday night and recorded his first career brace in the match vs. UTRGV. In just the sixth minute, Soto intercepted a back pass to the Vaqueros' keeper and found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
In the eighth minute, Soto scored again after Christian Marquez recovered a missed shot from the Golden Eagles and passed the ball to Soto directly in front of the goal. He notched another goal for MU to take a 2-0 advantage over UTRGV.
Series History
Friday's match will be the 21st contest between Marquette and Creighton. The first meeting between the Golden Eagles and the Bluejays dates back to 1983, which resulted in a 1-0 victory for the Golden Eagles. From then on, the squads have competed fairly evenly with either side holding an advantage, the series record holds at 9-9-2 making both teams' BIG EAST opener a tiebreaker. Last season, the Golden Eagles and the Bluejays' match ended in a 2-2 draw.
