Golden Eagles open league play Thursday vs. DePaul
The Marquette University women's soccer team (3-4-2, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) wrapped up the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 1-1 draw against St. Thomas (2-2-3) Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields.
Â
The Golden Eagles, who are in the middle of a season-long four-match homestand, open BIG EAST action Thursday night against DePaul.
Â
Scoring opportunities were limited on both sides the entire afternoon. Marquette finished with four shots on goal and the Tommies had just a pair, forcing MU netminder Mikki Easter to make just one save.
Â
After falling behind in the 25th minute, the Golden Eagles quickly responded on their first shot on goal less than two minutes later. Maggie Starker weaved her way through the defense and sent a perfect cross to the far post from the right side. Freshman Emily Fix headed the service back across the goal inside the far post from six yards out for her first-career score.
Â
"It was a perfect service from Maggie and to be honest I kind of blacked out after I headed it," Fix said. "I didn't even know if it went in at first, but was glad that it did."
Â
Starker had an early second-half chance sail wide from inside 10 yards and Hailey Block saw her blast from distance saved by the St. Thomas keeper. Head coach Frank Pelaez utilized his roster depth as well, with 10 players seeing action as a reserve.
Â
Prior to Sunday's match, the Golden Eagles honored the five members of the team's senior class. Aeryn Kennedy, Katie Koker, Alexa Maletis, Mae Sinclair and Elsi Twombly were all recognized for their contributions to the program, both on the field and campus.
Â
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles return to action on Thursday, Sept. 21 when the team hosts DePaul for a 7 p.m. CT matchup at Valley Fields.
