Schad nets second of season, Gibson scores for first time
The Marquette University women's soccer team (4-4-2, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) opened BIG EAST Conference play with a 2-1 victory against DePaul (4-3-1, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) Thursday night at Valley Fields.
Â
The Golden Eagles are now 2-0-1 on their season-long four-match homestand.
Â
"It's always good to score goals, especially against a really good keeper," head coach Frank Pelaez said. "We were able to take advantage of our opportunities at the offensive end and our defense was really good tonight."
Â
It was a slow start offensively in the first half for both squads, but Marquette was able to control possession. Midway through the stanza, freshman Taylor Schad put MU on the scoreboard first with a left-footed strike that found the upper-right corner of the net in the 21st minute.
Â
Forward Kate Gibson moved MU ahead 2-0 in the 28th minute, touching home her first of the season from eight yards out. Gibson tracked down Aeryn Kennedy's long free kick in the box and beat the DePaul keeper to the ball.
Â
Marquette finished with four shots on goal and DePaul's only attempt on frame was on a penalty kick in the 85th minute.
Â
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, Sept. 24 when the team hosts Butler for a 1 p.m. CT matchup at Valley Fields.
