Blocks scores twice, Bieda nets game winner
The Marquette University women's soccer team (5-5-2, 2-1-0 BIG EAST) continued BIG EAST Conference action on Thursday night with a 3-1 victory at Creighton (2-5-4, 0-3-0 BIG EAST).
Â
Marquette's three goals marked a season high and were the team's most since a 4-1 win at Butler on Sept. 25, 2022. Netminder Mikki Easter matched a career best with eight saves, including multiple acrobatic efforts in the second half.Â
Â
"Mikki did a great job in goal, she was fantastic," Hailey Block said. "We know she's going try and get every ball and you saw that tonight."
Â
Marquette's Hailey Block got the Golden Eagles on the board early in the first half, banging a shot from the top of the box off the right post and into the back of the net. The goal was her first since score on March 18, 2021 in a 3-1 win at home over Xavier. Block now owns 11 career scores in five total seasons at Southeast Missouri and Marquette.
Â
After Creighton knotted the score at 1-1 in the seventh minute, sophomore Josie Bieda gave MU a 2-1 advantage in the 23rd minute. Moments after checking into the game, she also rattled a shot off the right post and past the keeper from the top of the box for her second of the campaign.
Â
Block struck again late in the first half for a 3-1 lead, cleaning up a free kick inside the box and sneaking it inside the left post this time. She is the first Marquette player to net two goals in a match since Katrina Wetherell netted two in the season opener against Central Michigan in the 2021 season opener.
Â
Marquette's defense was solid the entire night, especially in the second half. The Bluejays collected nine shots on goal in the final 45 minutes, while the Golden Eagles didn't register a single attempt with the two-goal lead.
Â
UP NEXT: The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, Oct. 1 when the team travels to UConn for a 12 p.m. CT matchup.
