MU victory snaps 19-match home unbeaten streak by UWM
The Marquette University women's soccer team (2-3-1, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) continued its three-match road swing with an impressive 1-0 win at Milwaukee (3-2-2) Thursday night at Engelmann Stadium.
Â
Marquette's win snapped a 19-match unbeaten streak (19-0-1) at home by the Panthers that dated back to September of 2021. The victory was MU's first on the Milwaukee campus since a 5-0 decision on Sept. 23, 2013.
Â
"I was really impressed with our focus and toughness tonight," head coach Frank Pelaez said. "We were determined to move forward and we are showing glimpses of the team we are capable of being on a consistent basis. Really proud of this group tonight."
Â
In a second half that saw the Panthers hit the post and the crossbar, Marquette's consistent pressure finally broke through in the 84th minute. Julia O'Neill played a ball down the right side and forward Josie Bieda was able to gain control off the bounce, settle the ball and beat the UWM netminder with her right foot inside the far post from 10 yards out.
Â
The goal was the second of Bieda's career and her first since Sept. 1, 2022 against UIC. Marquette keeper Mikki Easter didn't make a save on the night, but did grab her third shutout of the campaign.
Â
The Golden Eagles controlled possession in the first half, finishing with a 9-1 advantage in shots. Maggie Starker, Isa Cook and Emily Fix each had quality chances for Marquette and UWM's first shot attempt didn't come until the 45th minute.
Â
Freshmen Taylor Schad and Fix made their respective first-career starts and senior Alexa Maletis was in the starting 11 for the second time this season and third in her 36-match tenure. Newcomer Kiley McMinn also made her Marquette debut.
Â
The Golden Eagles return to action on Sunday, Sept. 10 when the team travels to Wisconsin for a 1 p.m. CT matchup.
