MILWAUKEE – The Marquette University men's soccer team (4-0-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) defeats UTRGV (2-2-0, 0-0-0 WAC ) 3-1 on Friday evening at Valley Fields.
"We did really well in the first half and created a lot chances for ourselves," head coach Louis Bennett said. "I was really happy how we kept the pressure on all night, this win feels really good."Â
Â
The Golden Eagles opened the match applying pressure to the back line of UTRGV, in just the 6th minute Beto Soto stole a back pass to the Vaqueros' keeper and found the back of the net for his first goal of the season.
Â
In the 8th minute, Beto Soto crossed the ball to Abdoul Karim Pare who passed it to Diegoarmando Alvarado who shot missed wide left, the ball stayed in play and Christian Marquez recovered it and passed the ball to Soto directly in front of the goal, he found the net for his first career brace and gave MU a 2-0 advantage.
Â
Moments later in the 8th minute, UTRGV commits a foul in the box resulting in a PK for the Golden Eagles, forward Brooklyn Merl elected to take the PK and scored once more for the Golden Eagles who notched a 3-0 early lead over the Vaqueros.
Â
In the 15th minute, the Vaqueros found a gap in Marquette back line and found the net to bring the score to 3-1.
Â
For the majority of the second half Marquette had decent looks at shots on goal but could not find the net again.
Â
Marquette's back line held strong, only allowing five shots for UTRGV while the Golden Eagles took 13.
MU continues it's best start since the 2012 campaign with five-straight opening victories.Â
