Golden Eagles 6-0 for first time since 2011-12
The No. 15/14 Marquette University men's basketball team (6-0, 0-0 BIG EAST) earned an 80-69Â victory vs. Georgia (5-1, 0-0 SEC) at the Atlantis, Paradise Island Bahamas on Saturday morning.
Â
Forward David Joplin led the way offensively with a career-high 29 points and Ben Gold chipped in 14 points and six rebounds. The Golden Eagles improved to 6-0 for the first time since the 2011-12 season when the squad won its first 10 games.
Â
The Golden Eagles opened the second half with a 19-5 run and led by as many as 15 points in the opening minutes. The Bulldogs, however, wouldn't go away and used a 11-0 run of their own to close the gap to just three points. MU responded, however, and eventually moved ahead by double digits down the stretch and Georgia was forced to foul to try and extend the game. Marquette shot 59.7 percent from the floor in the second half
Â
Marquette led by as many as eight points in the first half, but a trey by Joplin right before the buzzer gave the Golden Eagles a 36-35 advantage at the intermission. MU shot just 41.9 percent from the floor and was led by Joplin's 12 points, but foul trouble limited the action of Kam Jones, Stevie Mitchell and Chase Ross.
Â
Notables:
Marquette returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 27 at 8 p.m. CT when the team hosts Stonehill.
