The No. 8/9 Marquette University men's basketball team (22-8, 13-6 BIG EAST) wraps up the regular season portion of the 2023-24 campaign on Saturday, March 9 at 4 p.m. CT when the squad travels to Xavier (15-15, 9-10 BIG EAST). FOX features the television broadcast, with Jason Benetti (play-by-play) and Robbie Hummel (analyst) calling the action. Marquette has earned a first-round by in the BIG EAST tournament and could finish as high as second in the 11-team league.
Marquette Facing Xavier For 86th Time
Marquette and Xavier will meet for the 86th time on Saturday night, continuing a series that spans nearly half of the program's 105-year history.
The Golden Eagles own a 58-27 overall lead in matchups that date back to the 1958-59 campaign. MU dominated the pairings during the Al McGuire and Hank Raymonds era, at one point claiming 26-straight victories between 1969 and 1983.
Marquette claimed the first matchup this season, defeating the Musketeers, 88-64, on Feb. 25 at Fiserv Forum. Kam Jones led four players in double figures with a career-best 34 points and MU held Xavier to just 35.7 percent shooting from the floor.
BIG EAST Play Reaches Final Day
Marquette enters the final day of the regular season in second place in the 11-team BIG EAST and can finish anywhere from second to fourth.
To earn the No. 2 seed in the upcoming league tournament, the Golden Eagles must win at Xavier and have Creighton fall at Villanova on Saturday afternoon. The team could finish as low as fourth if it falls against the Musketeers and SHU defeats DePaul.
Should Marquette finish with the same record as either Creighton or Seton Hall, MU loses the tiebreaker due to wins by both the Bluejays and Pirates over top-seeded UConn.
The Golden Eagles claimed the BIG EAST regular season and tournament titles in 2023-23.
Ighodaro Reaches 1,000 Points On Senior Night
Marquette forward Oso Ighodaro became the 53rd player in Marquette history with 1,000 career points, joining teammates Kam Jones and Tyler Kolek, with a basket late in the second half on Senior Night against UConn.
The Chandler, Arizona, native now owns 1,002 points and has scored over 800 of the points in the last two seasons. He is ranked among the national leaders in field goal percentage (22nd, .601) and the league leaders in scoring (20th, 14.0 ppg.), rebounding (7th, 7.3 rpg.), steals (15th, 1.1 spg.), blocked shots (6th, 1.2 bpg.), offensive rebounds (5th, 2.9 orpg.) and defensive rebounds (13th, 4.4 drpg.).
The last time MU had three active players collect 1,000 career points in the same season came in 2007-08 when Dominic James, Wesley Matthews and Jerel McNeal all reached the mark. The trio was joined by Lazar Hayward in 2008-09.
Jones Putting Offense On His Shoulders
Marquette guard Kam Jones has been the team's leading scorer in each of the last two games without guard Tyler Kolek, but prior to that had stepped up his offensive production on the recent homestand.
In his last five games, which includes a pair of career-best 34-point efforts, Jones has connected on 46-of-76 (60.5 percent) of his shots from the field overall and 55.6 percent (20-of-362) of his attempts from behind the 3-point line. He has averaged 25.2 points per contest in those outings, along with 2.0 assists and 1.6 steals per outing.
