Home opener set for 5:30 p.m. at Valley Fields
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's soccer team (0-0-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) is set to kick off its 2024 campaign vs. Drexel (0-0-0, 0-0-0 CAA) on Thursday, August 22 at 5:30 p.m. CT at Valley Fields.
The Golden Eagles will close out their season opening weekend as they take on the Marist Red Foxes on Sunday, August 25 at 2 p.m. CT at Valley Fields.
THE DAIVD KORN ERA BEGINS
Thursday's match commences David Korn first season at the helm of the Golden Eagles. Korn joins Marquette after eight seasons at NCAA Division II Maryville University in St. Louis.
During his tenure at Maryville, which began in 2016, Korn compiled a record of 98-38-26. He led the Saints to three Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) tournament championships in 2018, 2020-21, and 2022, and a GLVC regular season championship in 2022, when he was named GLVC Co-Coach of the Year.
Under Korn's watch, Maryville notched six consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances from 2017-23.
NEW FACES FOR THE GOLDEN EAGLES
Marquette welcomes in 15 newcomers. Seven freshmen and eight transfers will join coach David Korn's squad this fall.
Freshmen for the Blue and Gold include Marten Brink (Stukenbrock, Germany), Adam Mekrami (Gottsunda, Sweden), Grant Locker (St. Louis, Mo.), Jack Wandschneider (Brookfield, Wis.), Leo Rodriguez (Edwardsburg, Mich.), Hudson Torrez (Walworth, Wis.), Cameron Simpson (Middlesbrough, England.).
Transfers for MU include Andreas Christou (Leivadia, Cyprus), Gabriel Rokov (Zadar, Croatia / Columbia International University), Matt Mclaughlin (Broadview Heights, Ohio / Notre Dame), Mitchell Dryden (Whitefish Bay, Wis. / University of Wisconsin), Tim Smith (Lee Summit, Mo. / Maryville), Clayton Hamler (Jefferson City, Mo. / Maryville), Justin Milovanov (Brooklyn, N.Y. / UMass Lowell), Gabe Anguil (Wauwatosa, Wis. / University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee).
MU RETURNS PRODUCTION
Marquette returns plenty of experience from last season, including 13 previous starters and 15 letterwinners.
Junior defender Tristan Rønnestad-Stevens returns for Marquette and looks to lead the Golden Eagles this season after being named team captain for the squad. Rønnestad-Stevens saw action in 12 matches last season, starting in 11. The Perth, Australia native served as the defensive anchor for the Golden Eagles last season.
The Golden Eagles' attack will feature senior forward Abdoul Karim Pare, who netted four goals and recorded two assists last season.
Marquette will also return junior midfielder Mitar Mitrovic who started 11 matches last season. Mitrovic tallied one goal and one assist last season while playing over 680 minutes.
FIRST TIME MATCHUPS
Thursday's match will be the first meeting between Marquette and Drexel in program history. The contest will be both squad's seasons lidlifters.
Sunday's match against Marist will also be the first contest between the two programs. Both teams will head into that matchup with one match under their belts in the 2024 season.
