Golden Eagles finish 2-0 in opening weekend
MILWAUKEE - The Marquette University men's soccer team (2-0-0, 0-0-0 BIG EAST) closed out its opening weekend with a 6-1 win over Marist (0-2-0, 0-0-0 MAAC) Sunday afternoon at Valley Fields.
Marquette got hot quickly, scoring in the seventh minute after freshman defender Jack Wandschneider knocked one in off a corner kick from Ryan Amond to put the Golden Eagles up. The goal was Wandschneider's first of his career.
Â
The Golden Eagles kept their momentum to score again in the 27th minute, this time coming from senior midfielder Justin Milovanov. Both senior forward Abdoul Karim Pare and junior midfielder Mitar Mitrovic notched an assist.
"Happy with this win, coming off of Thursday we didn't want to let our guards down coming into this game against a quality opponent in Marist," head coach David Korn said. "I thought we did a great job being unselfish and playing as team. The guys really leaned on each other playing in the heat and responding after we gave up a goal."
Â
Seven minutes after emerging from the locker room, Mitrovic knocked in an unassisted goal to put the Golden Eagles up by three over the Red Foxes.
Â
Marist scored their lone goal of the match during a penalty shot  after a handball call in the box against Marquette in the 55th minute, but the Golden Eagles were able to respond as junior midfielder Mitchell Dryden knocked in his second goal of the season.
Â
Junior forward Lucas Nesthus notched his first goal of the season in the 85th minute, knocking in an assist from both Dryden and freshman midfielder Clayton Hamler.
Marquette's final goal of the match came in the 90th minute. Dryden knocked in his second of the game to put the exclamation mark on the game.
