RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Marquette University junior men's golfer Johan Widal has carded consecutive 4-under 68s in the first two rounds of the Puerto Rico Classic at Grand Reserve Golf Club and is tied for third overall.
The Golden Eagles moved up one spot on the team leaderboard to ninth on Tuesday with a 4-under 284 following a 3-under 285 recorded Monday. MU is two strokes behind Tennessee in eighth place and five strokes ahead of Minnesota in 10th.Tournament-host Purdue and Ole Miss lead the event after 36 holes at 28-under and 27-under, respectively.
Widal began his second round on the back nine and made the turn at 3-under on the day after a birdie on the par-3 16th an an eagle on the par-5 18th. In total, Widal posted four holes under par on the day and a lone blemish with a bogey on the par-4 first hole. The native of Halmstad, Sweden has 10 birdies over 36 holes to lead the team.
Beyond Widal's play, MU received even-par rounds on Tuesday from Vincent Cervantes, Patrick Adler and Ryan Banas.
The Golden Eagles are paired with Tennessee and Virginia in Wednesday's third and final round, which is slated to begin with a shotgun start at 5:30 a.m. Central time. The three squads will head off tees 7-10 to resume play.

The Golden Eagles are coming off a win at BIG EAST Match Play on Feb. 3-4 at Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Florida for which Widal earned the first BIG EAST Male Golfer of the Week honor of his career. The Swede went 3-0 in match play and never reached the 17th hole in any contest.
MU is competing in its seventh-straight Puerto Rico Classic this year and former MU All-American Hunter Eichhorn holds the tournament's single-round scoring record with the 11-under 61 he shot in the third round of the event in 2022.
