LITCHFIELD PARK, Arizona – The Marquette University men's golf team finished second and senior Max Lyons was runner up with an 8-under-par 208 in the Bell Bank "Pay it Forward" Collegiate at Wigwam Golf Club's Gold Course.
Lyons shot a 4-under 68 over Monday's final 18 holes to jump into sixth place and climbed four spots up the individual leaderboard with a 2-under 70 on Tuesday. The Phoenix native has now recorded a pair of top-three individual finishes over the last week, including a third-place finish last week in The Johnnie-O at Sea Island's Seaside Course.
The Golden Eagles led the 16-team field by 15 strokes on Monday evening after posting a 16-under 272 in the first round and an 7-under 281 in the second. Iowa State stormed back in Tuesday's third round with a 20-under 268 to overtake MU by two strokes.
Sophomore Ryan Banas posted an unblemished first round on Monday morning with seven birdies to help the Golden Eagles out to an early lead. Johan Widal sat just one stroke behind Banas with a 6-under 66 in the opening round and the pair were tied for first entering Tuesday's final 18 holes.
Sophomore Mason Schmidtke, playing as an individual, fired MU's best round of the final day, a bogey-free 5-under 67.
